Ice to blame for D.A.R. building collapse in Midtown

ATLANTA - Officials say ice is to blame for collapsing the outer walls to the former Daughters of the American Revolution building in Midtown Atlanta.

Firefighters responded to the report of a collapsed vacant building in the 1200 block of Piedmont Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officials say firefighters were searching the collapsed structure for anyone inside.

Officials say the weight of the ice that accumulated on the roof during Wednesday's ice storm caused the outer red brick wall to bow and buckle then give way, leaving the Corinthian column were still standing.

The current owner of the very recognizable Midtown building says he will try to save it because he loved the history. Bert Sanders bought the house to renovate it to the point he could live inside of it. Sadly, the building dating back to 1911, now appears to look like it had been bombed.

Atlanta police officers blocked the southbound lanes of Piedmont Avenue due to the collapse. The adjacent apartments were evacuated due to the incident. No reports of injuries.
